After several years closed and as many in which its acquisition was processed, the historic Hotel Byblos de Mijas will reopen its doors in June 2022, coinciding with the start of the high season. As SUR has learned, the establishment will be renamed La Zambra Hotel, while maintaining its category as a great luxury, forming part of The Unbound Collection of the Hyatt chain.
The establishment will be managed by Marugal, a company specialized in the development, launch and operation of unique hotels, for whom the opening of this new establishment will mean its second operation in Andalusia and its second hotel in the province of Malaga. The hotel is owned by Intriva, a European private equity fund since 2019.
The mayor of Works and Tourism of Mijas, José Carlos Martín, and the councilor for Urbanism, Andrés Ruiz, visited the hotel's comprehensive remodeling works this Wednesday. In statements to SUR, they explain that although the project has involved a deep renovation of this accommodation, an icon of the glamor of the Costa del Sol for decades, both the facade and the most characteristic elements of it are restored and maintained. "The works have followed the pace set by what MIjas will be able to count on for this summer with one of the most characteristic hallmarks of luxury tourism in southern Spain," says Martín, who clarifies that the main pipelines have already been completed and that work is being done simultaneously in rooms and common areas, so once the work is finished, the project will enter the phase most dedicated to decoration and gardening.
Salvador rooms / archive A historic one that will focus on golf The 5-star Byblos Andaluz Hotel on the Costa del Sol has been for decades an emblematic establishment in Mijas that together with its two French brothers, Byblos St.Tropez and Byblos Courchevel, they have represented European prestige and glamor. Since it closed in 2015, the town had been orphaned by a landmark like this. In addition to the jobs that this new hotel complex could create, the recovery of the Byblos is also a symbol of economic recovery. The most relevant figures from the international political, artistic and business scene have passed through this high-level accommodation. Thus, one can highlight among them the former Princess of Wales, Lady Di; Julio Iglesias, the British band Rolling Stones, Antonio Banderas, the Saudi royal family, presidents of government, ministers and a long list of relevant personalities from all over the planet. It should also be noted that the Byblos Hotel was the first 5-star great luxury that tourists found upon arrival at Malaga airport, since the rest were already in Marbella and other more remote locations. The hotel, located on a small hill between two 18-hole golf courses in the Mijas Golf urbanization, was known for its peace, tranquility and especially privacy for clients. Asked by this newspaper, the councilors of Urbanism and Tourism highlighted the importance of launching this hotel for one of the tourist segments that are being promoted the most in the city: golf. «We cannot forget that golf tourists spend an average of 67 percent more per day in the municipality than a traditional visitor, so this hotel immersed in two courses is an added attraction for this traveler profile to decide on our destiny as well as the boost it represents for our hotel plant, "they explained.
The hotel is located in the Mijas Golf urbanization and has around 200 rooms. «From Urbanism we have given one of the most promising building licenses in recent years, because it means the generation of employment and wealth in our city with a star project that is going to reactivate the local and provincial economy as around 200 are going to be created direct jobs as well as all the indirect jobs that are linked to this type of business ?, says Ruiz. As this newspaper announced at the time, the councilor for Urbanism recalls that the building license has not been easy due to the problems that the property has caused for ten years, but that now its implementation is a reality. "The department continues to work closely on the project so that everything is in accordance with the parameters required for this type of accommodation, and thus be able to grant the occupancy license as soon as possible once the works are completed."
According to the information provided by the owners, La Zambra will have 196 rooms of different categories (double, standard, deluxe golf view, deluxe garden view, junior suite, standard suite and premium suite, as well as a grand suite of 125 square meters), all of them with terrace and views of the golf course or the mountains. The hotel offers access to the two golf courses and will include three swimming pools, two tennis courts and two paddle courts, a gym, a yoga and Pilates room, as well as a health center ('wellness') with a water area and Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, sauna and hammam. It will also house ten treatment rooms.
The establishment's facilities are completed with a disco, a space for multidisciplinary events and a children's area. In addition, its gastronomic offer at La Zambra will be "flexible and personalized" according to the needs and tastes of the client; in fact, it will include, at sunset, the rotunda bar, where you will remember the golden years of the Costa del Sol in the 90s.
Marugal currently has eleven hotels, while Intriva is an investment company that manages capital on behalf of institutional investors. For its part, Hyatt Hotels, as of June 30 this year, includes more than a thousand hotels and all-inclusive properties in 68 countries on six continents and, within, it has the Unbound Collection, ?a careful selection of stories, rather than a compilation of independent and unique hotels ?, they emphasize.
